Itinerary

5-Day Sahara Desert Tour from Fes to Marrakech

Day 1: Fes – Ifrane – Azrou – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Merzouga

Your desert adventure begins with an early morning departure from your accommodation in Fes. Journey south through the beautiful Middle Atlas Mountains, where your first stop brings you to Ifrane, an enchanting alpine-style town featuring clean streets, European architecture, and manicured gardens that have earned it the nickname “Little Switzerland of Morocco.” Continue through the ancient cedar forests surrounding Azrou, home to colonies of playful Barbary macaques that freely roam among the towering trees. Stop in the mountain town of Midelt, perfectly situated between the Middle and High Atlas ranges, where you’ll enjoy lunch surrounded by stunning mountain scenery. As you descend toward the desert, travel through the spectacular Ziz Valley, one of Morocco’s most impressive oases, where vast palm groves create a ribbon of green cutting through the arid landscape. Stop at panoramic viewpoints to capture the breathtaking contrast of lush palms against the desert backdrop. As the terrain transforms from mountain to desert, watch for your first glimpse of the majestic Erg Chebbi dunes rising dramatically on the horizon. Arrive at the edge of the Sahara by late afternoon, where you’ll settle into your comfortable accommodation with views of the golden dunes. Enjoy a delicious dinner and relax by the pool or take an evening stroll along the dune line, preparing for the desert adventures ahead.

Day 2: Merzouga Desert Discovery and Exploration

After a leisurely breakfast, dedicate this full day to discovering the diverse landscapes and rich culture surrounding the Sahara Desert. Choose from numerous exploration options based on your interests: embark on a 4×4 excursion around the Erg Chebbi dunes to visit desert nomads living in traditional tents, learning about their remarkable adaptation to life in this challenging environment. Journey to the nearby village of Khamlia, where you’ll be captivated by the hypnotic rhythms of Gnawa music performed by local musicians whose ancestors came from sub-Saharan Africa. Visit the village of Hassi Labied and other traditional settlements to experience authentic desert life and Berber hospitality. Explore ancient fossils embedded in the rocky desert terrain, remnants of the time when this region was covered by ocean. During the warmer months, cool off with a refreshing swim in your accommodation’s pool, or spend the afternoon climbing the towering dunes that rise directly in front of your lodging, where you’ll be rewarded with spectacular panoramic views across the golden sea of sand. As the day draws to a close, prepare for one of the highlights of your journey: mounting your camel for a trek into the heart of the Erg Chebbi dunes. Watch in awe as the setting sun transforms the desert into a canvas of brilliant golds, oranges, and reds. Arrive at your traditional Berber camp nestled among the dunes, where you’ll enjoy a delicious Moroccan dinner, warm hospitality around the campfire, and traditional music under an incredible display of stars. Spend the night in a comfortable tent, experiencing the profound silence and beauty of the desert night.

Day 3: Desert Sunrise – Rissani – Todra Gorge

Wake before dawn for an experience you’ll treasure forever: watching the sunrise paint the Sahara dunes in ever-changing hues as the desert comes alive with the first light of day. After this magical moment, ride your camel back across the dunes to your accommodation, where breakfast and a refreshing shower await. Begin your journey toward the dramatic gorges of the Atlas Mountains, but first, venture across the black desert landscape on an off-road adventure to reach the historic town of Rissani. Once a vital stop on ancient trans-Saharan caravan routes and the birthplace of Morocco’s current royal dynasty, Rissani offers an authentic glimpse into traditional Saharan life. If your visit coincides with market days, explore the lively souk where locals gather to trade dates, spices, livestock, and traditional crafts in an atmosphere that has remained unchanged for centuries. Continue north through Erfoud, renowned for its remarkable fossils dating back millions of years when this region lay beneath an ancient sea. Visit a local workshop to observe artisans transforming these prehistoric treasures into beautiful decorative pieces. Journey deeper into the Atlas Mountains until you reach the spectacular Todra Gorge, where massive limestone cliffs rise 300 meters on either side of a narrow canyon, creating one of Morocco’s most dramatic natural wonders. Take time to walk through this breathtaking gorge, popular with rock climbers from around the world, and feel the cool shade of the towering walls as a crystal-clear stream flows at your feet. Check into your accommodation in the gorge area, where you’ll enjoy dinner and overnight rest surrounded by towering canyon walls.

Day 4: Todra Gorge – Dades Valley – Rose Valley – Skoura – Ouarzazate

After breakfast with views of the magnificent gorge, begin your journey along the famous “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs,” so named for the countless fortified villages that line both sides of the route. These ancient earthen structures, some beautifully restored and others standing as romantic ruins, tell the story of Morocco’s architectural heritage and the wealthy families who once controlled these valleys. Travel through the stunning Dades Valley, ascending into mountainous terrain along scenic off-road trails that wind past traditional Berber villages perched on hillsides. Here, you may have the opportunity to visit local families, some of whom still live in cave dwellings, and learn about their daily lives herding goats and sheep across these rugged landscapes. The dramatic rock formations and lush green valleys create a photographer’s paradise at every turn. Continue through the fragrant Rose Valley, famous for its Damascus roses that bloom each spring, filling the air with their sweet perfume and providing the raw material for local rose water and cosmetic products. Pass through the verdant Skoura palm grove, an extensive oasis dotted with historic kasbahs and traditional irrigation systems that have sustained agriculture here for centuries. Arrive in Ouarzazate, often called the “Gateway to the Desert” and Morocco’s Hollywood due to the numerous international films shot in and around this city. Settle into your accommodation for dinner and overnight rest, preparing for the final leg of your journey.

Day 5: Ouarzazate – Ait Benhaddou – Telouet – High Atlas Mountains – Marrakech

After breakfast, begin your day with an optional visit to the famous film studios of Ouarzazate, where blockbuster movies and popular television series have been produced, taking advantage of the region’s dramatic desert landscapes and perpetual sunshine. Journey to the crown jewel of Moroccan architecture: the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Benhaddou. This remarkably preserved fortified village, with its distinctive earthen buildings rising like a pyramid against the hillside, has served as the backdrop for countless films including “Gladiator,” “Lawrence of Arabia,” “The Mummy,” and the “Game of Thrones” series. Explore the ancient streets and passages of this kasbahs, climbing to the top for panoramic views across the valley and gaining insight into traditional Moroccan building techniques that have endured for centuries. Continue your ascent into the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the winding Tizi n’Tichka pass, which reaches an elevation of 2,260 meters and offers breathtaking panoramic views of snow-capped peaks, deep valleys, and traditional Berber villages clinging to mountainsides. Stop for lunch at a mountain restaurant, savoring the fresh air and spectacular.
